Paul T. Given Park - Smithtown

Updated: Dec 31, 2021

Great kayak launch area

This launch site is near the Smithtown Bull. The park has two parking lots. The one further in is closer to the launch ramp. Leave at high tide to go north. Leave at low tide to go south. Heading north it is about 2 hours to Nissequoge State Park and the BEACH. The one draw back of this area is that the tide dependency makes it difficult to return. If you are going with a friend you can leave your kayaks at the launch and drop one of you cars at the parking lot of Nissequoge’s boat ramp.

There are also two kayak rental services that launch from this park, and upon arriving at the end of your trip they offer shuttle rides back to your car.

The river is really beautiful, and the beach just north of it is great too. It is double sided and you can access the Long Island sound there. There is also a bit of nature trails to explore with deer and desert like fauna.

I also recommend paddling through the canal on the west side between nissequoges boat ramp and the beach.

Another fun fact is that the historic Kings Park Psychiatric Center is in Nissequoge River State Park to check out. It is a historic asylum.
