This refuge is large and is similar to target rock wildlife refuge in how it is managed. One of the activities is for visitors to hold bird seed in their hands and try to have the smaller birds eat from their palms due to the large quantity of birds living in piece there. There are also several wild turkeys that roam freely here and that come pretty close to humans. Other species include hawks. There are nature trails and a beach straight to the back of the preserve. When you get to the beach, in non-summer months you can walk out to what could be called a quadruple beach. Basically, there are two parallel sand formations that have water between them as well as next to them. In the summer, this area is closed off to allow the nesting areas there to be undisturbed.
This refuge can be a nice pit stop on your Way to East hampton or sag harbor.
